How Air University GPA and CGPA are calculated

Air University grades relatively. Its Academic Regulations put it directly: the relative grading system is used by the subject instructor to grade, with letters assigned against the class distribution rather than a fixed percentage table. That is why this calculator asks for the letter you were awarded instead of pretending to convert marks into grades.

AU's scale runs on the familiar .67/.33 increments but stops short of a D+. It goes A (4.00), A- (3.67), B+ (3.33), B (3.00), B- (2.67), C+ (2.33), C (2.00), C- (1.67) and then straight to D (1.00) before F. The missing D+ is the most common error in Air University calculators. A generic eleven-grade table offers a 1.33 grade that AU does not award.

Add one semester at a time, one row per course. You get each semester's SGPA together with the running CGPA up to that semester, plus a transcript-style PDF export when you want the whole record in one place.

The Formula

SGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // one semesterCGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // all semesters

An F scores 0.00 grade points but its credit hours stay in the denominator. Results are rounded to two decimal places.

Worked Examples

Example 1: one semester's SGPA

A 16-credit-hour semester using Air University grade points.

Course 1, 4 CH, A (4.00)4 × 4.00 = 16.00
Course 2, 3 CH, A- (3.67)3 × 3.67 = 11.01
Course 3, 3 CH, B+ (3.33)3 × 3.33 = 9.99
Course 4, 3 CH, B (3.00)3 × 3.00 = 9.00
Course 5, 3 CH, C+ (2.33)3 × 2.33 = 6.99
Total grade points16.00 + 11.01 + 9.99 + 9.00 + 6.99 = 52.99
Total credit hours4 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 16
ResultSGPA = 52.99 ÷ 16 = 3.31

Example 2: the drop where D+ would have been

A weak 3-credit course that falls just below C-. At AU the next grade down is D, not D+.

At Air University the next grade is D3 × 1.00 = 3.00
An eleven-grade scale would give D+3 × 1.33 = 3.99
Difference on one course3.99 − 3.00 = 0.99
ResultA whole grade point on one course. This is why the AU scale must not be padded with a D+

Air University Islamabad Grading Scale

Air University letter grades and their grade points from its Academic Regulations. There is no marks column, because under relative grading the percentage behind each letter moves with the class. Note that the scale drops from C- straight to D. There is no D+.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Air University award a D+ grade?

No. AU's Academic Regulations list A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D and F for undergraduate programmes. There is no D+ between C- (1.67) and D (1.00). Calculators that show you a D+ for an AU course are using a generic HEC table rather than Air University's own.

Why can't I enter marks instead of a letter grade?

Because AU grades relatively. The regulations say the relative grading system is used, so your letter depends on how your class performed. The same 72% can be a B in one section and a B- in another. A calculator that converts AU marks to grades is guessing. This one uses the letter your transcript shows.

I'm an MS or PhD student. Is the scale the same?

Almost. The grade points are the same from A down to C+. But the AU regulations mark C- and D as "not applicable" for MS, M.Phil, MBA and PhD programmes, so those grades exist only at undergraduate level. Postgraduate students also need a higher CGPA, usually 2.50 for MS and 3.00 for PhD, against 2.00 for BS.

How is a course's final mark made up at AU?

The regulations set the weightings by course type. A subject with lab work is typically 45% final, 20% mid-term, 15% quizzes and assignments and 20% practical or project; a subject without lab work is 45% final, 35% mid-term and 20% quizzes and assignments. Management Sciences programmes allow 45–50% final with up to 5% class participation.

What happens to an I or W grade?

Neither carries grade points. An I means incomplete. It is awarded when you are barred for short attendance with 50% or more internal assessment, or when you miss the final for an unavoidable reason. It becomes a real grade once the exam is retaken. A W marks a dropped course. Leave both out of the calculator.

Are marks rounded before the grade is decided?

Yes. AU rounds the overall subject percentage once, with a fraction of 0.5 or more going up to the next whole number. Because grading is relative, that rounded mark then feeds into the class distribution rather than a fixed band.
